Christmas Comes Slowly For John Lewis

Thursday 15th November 2007

The well known department store John Lewis is reporting low figures for weekly sales in the run up to Christmas this year suggesting that shoppers are spending less or spending later this year.

The partnership which is co-owned by its workers reports sales weekly and in the week ending 10th November the company saw a rise of only 1.8% in sales figures. This is very low compared to the same period last year when figures rose by 14.4%.

As well as low figures coming in this week the company has also reported that in the 10 weeks prior to November 10th the sales figures rose by a mere 2.8% over the entire period. This is again minimal when compared to last year’s figure of 15.8%.

The company is not worried however and feel that they are ‘well placed’ for the Christmas boom that they are hoping will come in the next few weeks.
