Home Insurance UK - Premium Calculations
Your final house insurance uk premium is based on a number of factors. The most significant of these is likely to be your postcode, as most insurers use the claims history of policyholders in your area to determine premiums, as well as other statistical information about your neighbourhood. Your own claims record is also significant. There are a number of other questions that an online insurer may ask to enable them to determine the risk that you represent when applying for house insurance. These are likely to include:
- Your name, date of birth and occupation (they may require these details from your spouse as well)
- The type of property to be insured i.e. flat, semi-detached house or bungalow.
- Is the property self-contained?
- How many people live in the property (including children)?
- When was your house built?
- Is your house a listed building? (these tend to require specialist insurance policies)
- How many rooms/bedrooms are there?
- Do you own or rent your property?
- Is your house of standard construction? By this, most insurers mean a house constructed of brick or stone, with a tiled or slated roof and if your home deviates from this definition, you may have to pay higher insurance premiums
- Is your house ever left unoccupied? If so, when, and for how many consecutive days?
- Do you operate any business activities from your house?
- Do you have mortise deadlocks?
- Are there accessible windows or skylights?
- Is there a burglar alarm fitted? What type of alarm is it?
- Do you have a smoke alarm?
- Are you a member of a neighbourhood watch scheme?
- Do you require buildings cover, contents cover or both?
- Do you want optional accidental damage cover?
- Estimated value of contents and building.
- Have you made any house insurance claims within the last 3 years?
- Do you live in a high-risk flood area?
- Have you previously made a claim for flood or subsidence damage?
