Accidents

If you are involved in an accident then it is important that you keep your head at a time of stress. We have composed a useful checklist of measures that you should take if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident. You should remember that on no account should you leave the scene if you are involved in an accident.

  • Check that everyone involved is unhurt. If anyone is injured, even if injuries seem slight, then someone should call for medical attention. Basic first aid can be provided at the scene but it is of vital importance that nobody is moved if they are hurt as this could cause further damage.
  • If the accident is anything more than a minor bump then you should call the police. It is a good idea to take note of the police officer's name and station so that you can contact him/her if you need to trace the accident report.
  • Before any eyewitnesses leave the scene get their names and addresses.
  • You will be required to give your details to anyone who is within their rights in requesting it.
  • Try not to discuss fault and blame at the time of the crime as this could cause complications when a claim is made.
  • You should have your car insurance certificate with you at all times when driving your vehicle, but if you do not then you must produce it at a police station within twenty-four hours of your accident.
  • Try to get as much information as you can at the scene of the accident. Record the date and time of the accident as well as the location. You will also need to take note of the registration number, insurance details and driving license information from each of the drivers involved.
  • It is a good idea to try and draw a diagram to remind you of exactly how the accident occurred in your mind. Try and illustrate the direction and speed of each of the drivers. You should also try to write down a summary of the events which includes every important detail that you can recall.
