Antigua

With its white sandy beaches and warm, clear water, it isn’t any wonder that Antigua is swiftly becoming a top holiday destination for many. Much more than an island used by couples to get married on, Antigua is an ideal place to go no mater what you are looking for in a holiday.

An island located in the Caribbean Sea, those lucky enough to be visiting the island will appreciate the warm year-round temperatures that range between 27 and 31 degrees Celsius at all times of the year. September to November is the time to avoid the island however if you want to miss out on the occasional shower of rain. Beaches are a huge part of the Antiguan culture and as the locals often point out, they have 365 beaches, one for every day of the year.

One of the best places to visit if you want to avoid crowds, is Darkwood Beach on the southwest coast. Not only will you be able to soak up the rays without distraction, but there are also stunning views of the nearby Montserrat volcano to be appreciated. If you are looking for a bit more action out of your beach however, Half Moon Bay might be a better option. The waters are a bit rougher due to its Atlantic coast position making it the perfect place to have a go at surfing or windsurfing.

If relaxing on the beach with a refreshing cocktail in hand is not your idea of a good holiday, then Antigua might not be suited to you. Many of the islands public beaches have bars and restaurants, though not so many that it ruins the natural beauty of the area. If the thought of lying down for too long in the sun is enough to make you start sweating then there is always a whole host of beach activities on offer. Try sailing on a catamaran or snorkelling for fish in the tempting waters.

It has to be said that whilst the beach makes up a large part of the attraction of Antigua, there are many other attractions available to keep you occupied.

Shirley Heightslooks out over an English harbour and every Sunday there is a barbecue, live music and dancing that goes on well into the night. For a lively and welcoming impression of the island, this treat should surely not be missed. The island’s capital, St. Johns also makes for a fulfilling and worthwhile day out. As well as providing some historic landmarks, for example, the Anglican Cathedral, it is also home to the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, an interactive hands-on approach to learning more about the islands.

Heritage Quay also provides the ideal opportunity to do some serious shopping whether it be for a personal treat or for souvenirs to take home. There is also a public market in the south end of the town every Friday and Saturday if you want to make like the locals and get down to some haggling!
