Disadvantages and Exclusions
There are certain factors that could disadvantage when applying for a car insurance policy that you should be aware of.. We have compiled a list of situations that are likely not to be looked upon favourably by insurers, and could cause you difficulty in procuring UK motor insurance or in satisfying a claim that you have made. Some disadvantages will simply mean that you are likely to pay higher insurance premiums.
Convictions
If you have driving convictions then you could have difficulty in obtaining UK car insurance. If you don't have a clean license then it is most likely that you will find yourself paying higher premiums and a higher level of compulsory excess.
Dangerous location
The location of your home can also affect your premiums, and it is likely that if you live in an inner city area then you could find yourself paying higher UK car insurance premiums. Higher levels of traffic and higher crime rates in urban areas are likely to bump up your premiums.
Deception
If you are planning to sell your vehicle then be sure to receive full payment from the buyer before you part with your motor. If you lose your vehicle in this way then it is classed as 'deception' and you will not be covered by your UK car insurance policy.
Drink driving
Drink driving convictions are taken very seriously by UK car insurance companies. It is very difficult for a person with proven drink driving convictions to be accepted for a UK car insurance policy, and if they are then they are likely to be charged exceedingly high premiums.
Hazardous occupation
If you have a hazardous occupation then you could be charged higher premiums, particularly if you use your car in conjunction with your work. A typical job that is often considered hazardous is that of a journalist. Speak to your insurer if you think that your job title means that you are being penalised unfairly.
Health problems
Certain illnesses and health problems could create problems for you when trying to procure car insurance in the UK. You will need to declare particular illnesses or conditions on your application form.
Poor claims record
A poor previous claims record is almost certain to bump up your UK car insurance premiums. Insurance companies will usually also ask customers with a poor claims record to pay a higher compulsory level of excess.
Unsafe vehicle
Almost all UK car insurance companies will insist that you must agree to keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition if they are to protect you with cover. If you fail to do so then it is likely that any claims you might make will not be paid.
