One of the most intriguing aspects of the Dominican Republic is the two faces that it seems to represent. On one side there appears to be the coastline dotted with various resorts. Here it is not hard to find many a tourist spread out on the sand, enjoying a cool drink and relaxing under the warm sun. The other side of the country that is situated on the Caribbean Island of Hispaniola is equally laid back, despite being filled with country roads and locals working hard in fields of sugar cane, cocoa and coffee. There is no tension between the two however as the locals are very much appreciative of the trade that the tourists bring in. What is also interesting about the country is that it shares the island with its neighbouring country, Haiti. If warm weather and a relaxed attitude to life sound like the ideal ingredients to your perfect holiday then the Dominican Republic is ideal for you.
Whilst having a lazy day on the beach is most people’s choice of activity, there may come a time when you want to explore the country a little more. In terms of this, the Dominican Republic has a lot to offer. The mountainous region of Jarabacoa otherwise known as the Dominican Alps is the perfect place to go and appreciate nature. The actual town itself offers little apart from a few restaurants; the attraction of the town is in the excursions that are available on foot, bike or horse back to the surrounding forests and waterfalls. For a real day of action why not have a go at white water rafting or paragliding. Santo Domingo, the capital of the country also has a lot to offer, though perhaps not quite so much nature as Jarabacoa. The capital is full of museums, galleries, shops and restaurants. Diverse in history and architecture, a lot can be learnt from even a short visit to this part of the country. In particular, the Dominican Church and Convent is an ancient and interesting building that is also a university.
Depending on whether you can stand the heat or not, the Dominican Republic’s popularity is largely due to the consistent temperatures that grace the country. There is little variation year-round from the country’s average 25 degrees Celsius. The tropical climate certainly makes for ideal holiday conditions.
