Energy Efficiency
Using your gas and electricity in and around the home more efficiently can help save you money and the environment. Here are some simple tips on how to become more energy efficient:
- Turn off lights when you leave a room. Try to buy energy efficient light bulbs - they cost more but last longer and use less electricity than standard bulbs.
- Turning your heating thermostat down 1 degree could cut your bills by 10%.
- Reduce drafts by closing curtains at dusk, and draft-proof windows and doors. Taping polythene across windows is a cheap alternative to double glazing.
- Don’t leave the fridge door open longer than necessary, allow hot food to properly cool before putting it in the fridge and defrost your fridge on a regular basis to help maintain its performance.
- Where possible always fully load your washing machine and if you can’t then use the economy or half load cycle.
- Only fill the kettle up for as many cups as you need when making tea. This will ensure that as little energy as possible is being used to boil the water.
- Don't leave the tap running when brushing teeth; this could cut the amount of water you use during this task drastically.
- In the winter, try and wear more layers of clothing rather than turning the heating up.
