Many people experience a fear of flying and it is estimated that up to 40% of people who take to the air encounter some form of anxiety.

The first step to combating a fear of flying is to understand and recognise that flying is safe and statistically is much safer than travelling by road. Before you fly, make sure that you are aware of the journey you will be making, find out about the plane you will be flying in, the interior, and the sounds and movements to expect so as to familiarise yourself when you finally board the plane.

It is essential to eat well before your flight and to arrive at the airport in good time, take some time to do some shopping or have a bite to eat at the airport so you are not just sitting and waiting for the plane. It is also essential to allow for delays and if you anticipate feeling anxious at the airport, take a good book or some calming music to absorb yourself in.

Once on the plane ask for a seat at the front of the plane where the motion is more stable and don’t be afraid to alert Cabin Crew to your fear and ask any questions you need to.

Remember, a fear of flying is common and is nothing to be ashamed of, and the Cabin Crew will be able to alleviate many of your fears. Plus try to avoid alcohol and caffeine when on your flight and drink water to keep yourself hydrated.
