Green Energy

Sustainable development is of increasing importance in today’s world and industries are increasingly encouraged to find ways of improving and providing green products and services. Green energy comes from renewable sources, the main ones being wind energy, solar energy, hydroelectric energy, tidal energy and biomass. The idea is that the more we use renewable energy, the cheaper it will become and the more we will be preserving the environment.By choosing green sources of energy you are helping to protect the environment for future generations.

All electricity companies are now required to buy at least 3% of their electricity from green power sources, meaning that a 'green tariff' is now available with all suppliers. At present gas and electricity companies are offering two types of green energy;

  • Fund - this is where as part of your bill you pay a contribution to reputable environmental schemes, research or projects.
  • Source - this is where your energy has been generated from a renewable source, or the energy you have used from the national grid is replaced with as much renewable energy as you have used.

There is a common assumption that switching to greener energy will involve a significant increase in the cost, but this is not strictly true. Whilst some suppliers do have to charge more for consumers wishing to use green energy, the difference is actually relatively small and some suppliers charge no more. As more and more people start realising the benefits of using green energy it will eventually become a very cheap option.

There are lots of things we can do in our own home to help the environment including creating our own energy through Solar Panels, watering our gardens with rain water collected in a Water Butts and Composting some of the waste from our homes.
