As an employee it is vital that you know your rights. All of the information regarding tax rates, employers' liabilities and legal information is available to the general public, but it's difficult to know where to look and it can sometimes feel awkward to ask.
Although the details of the agreement between employee and employer depend on the individual contract, there are general codes of practice (managed by the Department of Trade and Industry) that bind both parties regardless of any contract that has been signed.
The DTI creates national legislation on:
- Hours of work
- Wages and pay
- Redundancy procedures
- Injuries in the workplace
- Equal opportunities
- Working on public holidays, and much more.
If you feel confused about your rights, or if you just want to find out more to be in the know then you could contact the citizens' advice bureau - for a free, impartial, professional opinion.
