Pet Insurance

Pet Travel Insurance

Previously pets entering the UK had to be kept in quarantine for six months before being allowed to come home with their families. A new government scheme however now allows cats and dogs to travel to specified countries as normal passengers. With the number of Brits travelling abroad for long periods of time increasing and with a rise in the number of second homes being bought it is inevitable that you would want your pet with you for the duration. With the new government scheme it is now wholly possible to travel with your pet providing you follow the regulations laid down in the scheme. Pet travel insurance is also an important option if you chose to take your cat or dog abroad and can cover a wide range of eventualities including overseas vets fees, cancellation fees and costs to replace travel documentation. Pet insurance can be bought as a separate policy or often travel insurance can be added on to your standard pet insurance policy.

How do I travel with my pet?

There are 3 main stages to the government scheme allowing your pet to travel abroad.

Microchipped

Pets must be microchipped and then vaccinated against rabies. Blood tests must then be carried out to ensure they are vaccinated to a satisfactory level.

Documentation

Pets must be treated against ticks and tapeworm 24-48 hours before they travel to the UK. Pets must have documentation to support their vaccinations, blood tests and tapeworm treatments.

Travel

Pets must travel with an approved transport company on an organised route.

What can pet travel insurance cover?

Pet travel insurance cover can vary from provider to provider so it is important you check each policy carefully before signing up. Policy cover can include however:

  • Liability insurance
  • Quarantine costs
  • Emergency expenses
  • Loss of documentation
  • Emergency tick worm treatment
  • Overseas vets fees
  • Cancellation fees
