Plastic Not So Fantastic

Thursday 18th October 2007

Councillors in Brighton and Hove have voted this week to make the city a plastic free environment by encouraging shops to stop handing out plastic bags to their customers.

It is estimated that over 33 million carrier bags are handed out every day in the city and the council claims that as shoppers become more environmentally aware, it is the perfect time to try and eradicate their use.

The fashionable North Laine’s, a shopping area in the City has already made moves in the right direction. They have stopped using carrier bags and are instead offering customers the chance to purchase unique reusable cotton bags. These new bags were also unveiled this week and were specially desisgned by three artists from the city.

The councils vote was unanimous and it is hoped that other areas of the city will be able to follow the example set by retailers in the North Laines.
