Rise in Obesity Drug Use

Wednesday 30th January 2008

Figures released this week highlight that the number of prescriptions issued for obesity drugs is now 8 times the figure that it was 7 years ago.

Of the 1 million prescriptions that were issued last year the two main drugs issued were sibutramine which sends messages to the brain to tell it you are full and orlistat which absorbs the fat from food eaten.

With nearly a quarter of adults now in the obese category many doctors are calling for the government to spend more money on educating the public.

There are also calls to review the levels of food consumption in both adults and children in the UK along with policies to help people of all ages increase their activity levels.
