Sharp Fall In Album Sales
Wednesday 9th January 2008 The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) released figures this week showing an 11% drop in album sales during 2007 with 138.1 million albums sold in 2007, compared with 154.7 million in 2006.
The BPI has put this decline down to illegal downloading and has also stated that ‘album unburdening’ in which individual tracks are purchased online rather than whole albums has played a part in the fall.
Comparatively however the report also showed an increase in singles sales with downloading in this area increasing by 30%.
There was also a decline in the US were sales fell by 9% - it is thought that this trend is set to continue throughout 2008 on both sides of the Atlantic.
