Students Learn A Thing Or Two About Insurance

Monday 10th September 2007

Glasgow Sheriff Court was the setting this week for the trail of 3 students involved in an insurance scam in which they faked the death of 2 women allowing them to cash in on over £125,000.

The students have admitted to faking the deaths and explained in court how they had printed off death certificates from the internet and composed fake lawyers letters to accompany them. One of the students, a part time employee of Scottish Life Assurance used his position within the firm to rubber stamp the claims.

The three were caught when the husband of one of the victims rang Scottish Life Assurance to query why their next premium had been rejected and informed the company that his wife was indeed alive and well.

The judge presiding over the hearing Sheriff Deirdre MacNeill QC has deferred sentencing on the three students until next month.
