Travel Insurance Jargon
Assurance - another word for insurance.
Backpackers insurance - this type of insurance provides cover for those intending to stay away for a long period of time and visit a number of different countries.
Benefit - this is another word for the money paid out by an insurer when a claim is successfully made.
Broker - a broker is an intermediary offering insurance products. Intermediaries can be either independent or 'tied' to particular insurance companies.
Claim - to make a claim is to seek payment or compensation under the terms and conditions of a policy.
Cover note - a cover note provides temporary evidence of insurance whilst the official documents are being prepared.
Dangerous sports insurance - if you are planning to be involved in hazardous activities whilst you are away then you will need a specialist travel insurance UK policy to protect you as your needs will not be met by regular cover. Hazardous sports might include whit water rafting, windsurfing, abseiling or pot holing.
Excess - excess is the amount of a claim that the policyholder agrees to pay before the rest of the claim is met.
Exclusion - exclusions are particular people, property or situations that will not be covered by the insurance policy.

Green card - this document provides internationally recognised proof of car insurance that is needed when driving abroad.
Insurance premium tax - also referred to as IPT, this is a tax levied by the government on almost all insurance products sold in the UK.
Insured - the term 'the insured' refers to the policyholder and anyone else who is insured under a policy.
Insurer - the company from which a policy is issued.
Long stay insurance - a specialist form of UK travel insurance intended for people staying abroad for a long period of time.
Multi-trip insurance - for one annual fee this type of insurance will cover the policyholder for numerous trips made within one twelve-month period.
Policy - the word 'policy' is a general term used to describe an insurance agreement. The policy document is a transcript detailing the various terms and conditions of this agreement.
Policyholder - the policyholder is the person named in the policy document who will be covered by the insurance in addition to anyone else named on the travel insurance UK policy.
Premium - premium is the word used to describe the (usually monthly) payments that you make to your insurer in order to pay for your insurance cover.
Single trip insurance - an individual travel insurance UK policy arranged to provide cover for an individual trip.
Winter sports insurance - this type of insurance will provide the extra protection required for hazardous winter sports.
