Travel

Having organised all your travel arrangements all that there is left to do now is enjoy your trip. Taking a few extra precautions whilst abroad can help give you peace of mind and reduce the risks of disruption due to unfortunate occurrences should there be any.

Before you Go:-

  • Make sure that the travel arrangements and bookings made are confirmed.
  • Duplicate important documentation.
  • Don’t carry large sums of cash.
  • Have two sources of cash and keep them separate.
  • Leave valuables and passports in the hotel safe.
  • Don’t walk round visibly wearing expensive jewellery.
  • Conceal valuables such as cash and cameras.
  • Make sure luggage labels are secure and clearly identifiable.
  • Learn some important phrases - remember not everyone speaks English.
  • Prepare a list of emergency telephone numbers and addresses.

Make sure too that someone at home has an up to date itinerary of your trip and make sure you check in with them regularly. Many mobiles now are multiregional making this much easier but you can also find cheap phone cards in most destinations.

Once you have arrived make sure you keep your hotel door locked at all times and avoid leaving valuable such as your passport in your room. Take care too on the streets – make sure you do not venture into areas where you could become a victim, especially at night. Take care when travelling on Tubes, Subways and Trains and try and to travel on public transport with someone that you know. Never take unmarked taxis and it is worth asking the local tourist board for an approved company to ensure you stay safe. At night try to avoid quiet walkways, isolated areas and poorly lit streets.

Pick pocketing is major problem in many countries across the world; make sure you are aware of your belongings at all times. Try to keep a secure grip on your bag and try not to wear a rucksack as anyone could take things out without you being aware. Make sure that you do not put your bag down, say to take a photograph as you may find that it is swiped before you realise. Try too to keep some money on you somewhere other that your bag just in case the worst happens and you are left stranded. You can purchase money belts that can be worn under your clothes which are a great option but if not maybe place a folded note in your sock or bra.
