Upgrading Your Mobile Phone
The concept of upgrading your mobile phone applies essentially to people who have a mobile phone supplied on a contract. Of course pay-as-you-go mobile phone customers have the option of upgrading their phones whenever they choose, but it does mean paying the going rate for the handset.
If you’re on a contract upgrades are usually offered annually, as a loyalty bonus really. Upgrades essentially mean you can get your hands on one of the latest mobile phone handsets for free or at a discounted rate. However, it does mean that you will be tied to another 12-month contract with your service provider. As a result, upgrade time can be a good time to shop around for a better mobile phone deal online.
Remember that the mobile phone industry is innovation-led with new phone models being launched every month. This is what makes upgrading so appealing as you can get hold of a new, trendier mobile phone to impress your friends with.
If you’re happy with your current mobile phone, and don’t really fancy having to learn a myriad of new key presses to access text or voicemail, then just keep your current mobile phone. Doing this means that you may be offered a discount on your next few mobile phone bills instead. However, be aware that once again this ties you into another 12-month contract, in much the same way that upgrading your mobile phone does. Be aware that if you do decide to break your existing contract in order to get a better deal elsewhere in the following 12-month period, your current service provider is likely to ask for any discount or reductions to be repaid to them.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on the latest phones, there can be some great upgrade or trade-in deals available online. If the 12 months of your contract are over, you should be able to upgrade to a newer phone for free, or at a greatly reduced price. If your 12 months aren’t up yet upgrading may still be possible, but you will be required to pay an upgrade fee. These fees vary between networks, and can be affected by how much you actually use your mobile phone. If you’re a heavy user you may find the fee is waived or at least reduced when you come to upgrade.
