Computer Viruses
All computers are vulnerable to viruses - here are some major types:
- Viruses - Viruses are parasitic bits of software that attach themselves to other programmes, so that every time that programme runs, the virus reactivates.
- Trojan horses - A programme that pretends to be one thing (something useful and safe) but is actually a virus.
- Email viruses - Viruses that attach themselves to email messages and automatically replicate to all your contacts, or convince you to forward them.
- Worms - Worms move through security holes in computer networks. A worm will spot a computer with a similar hole to the one it's in and filter through into it.
If you think that your computer has got a virus then you should contact the company that made the computer who will often be able to advise you on obtaining a remedy or virus 'patch'. The best think to do is be cautious and protect your computer with anti-virus software. Be careful when downloading programmes from the internet and think twice before opening an email from an unknown sender.
