Choosing Your Bouquet

There is an enormous choice of styles available these days, traditional, contemporary, full, hand tied and so on. The best person to speak to is your florist who will advise you on styles and seasonal availability.

  • Drop Shower bouquet

Flowers and stems flow from the top of the bouquet by individual wires making the arrangement quite wide.

  • Teardrop bouquet

In this style blooms are attached to a central wire from top to bottom making the bouquet appear like a teardrop shape.

  • Shower bouquet

This bouquet has trailing flowers attached to a central wire. The top of the arrangement is in a posy shape.

  • Trailing bouquet

This style is slender with no posy top and a popular style for bridesmaids.

  • Formal Posy bouquet

A popular choice with brides this type of bouquet is perfectly round in shape with minimal foliage, feathers, diamante’s and other luxurious decorations added in for and individual effect.

  • Hand tied bouquet

This is a modern and less formal style of bouquet with flowers on their natural stems which are bound in satin ribbons.

NB: When choosing you bouquet make sure you keep the size of the bouquet in proportion to your body size. Long trailing bouquets will give the illusion of slim lining your figure because they draw the eye downwards, while wide bouquets draw attention to the hips!!

Choosing the right bouquet for your wedding dress

Certain shapes of bouquet suit particular dress shapes and fabric more than others.

  • Full skirt with fitted bodice

This style suits more of a larger shower style bouquet.

  • Slim fitting gown

Choose a smaller bouquet like a posy or slim line shower bouquet.

  • Princess line style dress

This style of gown will go perfectly with a teardrop or trailing bouquet.

  • A simple A-Line style dress

Opt for an extravagant bouquet to add detail.

  • A dress with lots of detail

Pick something simple but not too small to showcase the details on the dress.

The Symbolic Meanings of Flowers

Flowers generally symbolise love, fertility and happiness. Purple flowers are said symbolise the blood of Christ, while white flowers symbolise innocence.

Strong smelling herbs were believed to keep bad luck, evil spirits and ill health away with their pungent odours and were incorporated with flowers in the bride's bouquet.

A red rose and white snowdrop separately mean joy and hope, however for the superstitious, red and white flowers together have a bad omen which stem from the First World War and have come to represent blood and bandages!

When worn to decorate the hair or wedding dress of a bride Orange Blossom signified virginity. As an evergreen plant it also symbolised the everlasting nature of the newlyweds' love for each other.

The delicate Forget-Me-Not has been a symbol of undying love even since before the Middle Ages.
