Welsh Towns Encourage Local Shopping
Wednesday 2nd April 2008 The West Welsh towns of Llandeilo, Llandovery and Lampeter are trying to introduce a new currency in order to encourage shoppers to stay local.
The idea has been formed by the Welsh the Transition Towns movement, which encourages people to shop locally in order to sustain local business.
The currency would only be accepted by participating retailers, although they will continue to accept sterling also.
This is not a new idea and local currency is currently used in other UK cities including Devon.
It is hoped that the welsh currency will be launched by the end of the year and that many businesses will sign up to be a part of the scheme.
