Pantomimes and Christmas Shows
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a ‘he’s behind you’, raucous booing at a baddie or a mad scramble to be the first to get their hands on the wagon wheels heading off stage straight into the audience. As we head towards Christmas and Pantomime season is nearly upon us - even if you think you have outgrown the ritual there will be some little ones yet to be introduced to the world of glitter, smoke and magic that you enter when watching a pantomime. Whether at your local theatre or at one of the big London shows – whether you have a headlining celebrity as your Aladdin or a Z list Australian soap star as your Dame – enter into the spirit of things and take your son, daughter, niece, nephew, class of school children, or even go it alone with your boyfriend, best friend, partner or mum!!
Most pantomimes run from December to January and most will have 6 or 7 shows a week. Traditional pantomimes include:
- Puss in Boots – A cat in sexy knee highs tricks the king of the land into marrying the poor millers son – with ogres, princesses, romance, clever plots and a talking cat – what more could you want?!
- Cinderella – An oldie but a goodie – who cannot fail to love the tale of the servant girl made good – beware the ugly stepsisters, the wicked stepmother and fall in love with the fairy godmother and of course the handsome prince charming.
- Aladdin – With a magic genie, a flying carpet – an evil sorcerer and a beautiful princess – Aladdin is the ultimate tale of magic, romance and good overcoming evil.
- Peter Pan – The boy who never grew up is brought to life through pantomime as we watch him take on the evil captain hood and learn about the real world away from NeverNeverLand.
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears – When a young girl goes on a trip to the woods she gets more than she bargains for when she decides the breakfast of one very hungry family.
- Sleeping Beauty – An enchanting story of the beautiful princess sent to sleep for 100 years to be awaken only by the kiss of her prince – every little girl will love this tale and come away feeling like a princess.
- Jack and the Beanstalk – Magic beans, an evil giant, a quest to climb the tallest beanstalk in the land – need we say more?!
Make sure you check with your local theatre the age range the pantomime is suitable for before booking your tickets – there might be an extremely evil villain who may scare the very young.
If a pantomime really isn’t your thing – you may prefer a Christmas Ballet – The Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty are popular seasonal choices and you will also find Christmas plays, comedies and musicals for all the family.
